115 or 125mm cordless grinder? | MIG Welding Forum
Choosing Between 115mm and 125mm Cordless Grinders
Hello everyone! I’m looking for a reliable cordless grinder for my work and would love some guidance. My primary tasks involve grinding stones and cutting rebar. I already own several Makita tools, so I thought it might be wise to get a grinder that runs on the same battery platform. While browsing their website, I discovered not only the 115mm grinders but also 125mm options.
I find myself in a bit of a dilemma. I think the 125mm version might provide a longer lifespan for cutting discs, and it shouldn’t be significantly bulkier than the 115mm model, right? However, I must admit my knowledge about 125mm tools is quite limited. I haven't had any experience with them, nor have I seen one in action. Since the bore size remains consistent, would a 115mm disc fit onto a 125mm tool if necessary? I assume the RPM for the smaller discs could be slightly higher, if at all, so performance shouldn’t be a concern. The deeper cut offered by the 125mm could be beneficial occasionally for thinner slabs, though typically I would use a 230, 300, or 350mm cutter for that purpose.
There isn't much difference in price—only about £20—so that's not a determining factor. Which grinder would you recommend, and why?
Choosing and Utilizing Your Grinder Effectively
There are times when making a choice on which grinder to use can be tricky. Grinders are widely used tools for cutting various materials including metals, natural stones, and ceramics with abrasive or diamond discs, but they also offer a range of functionalities with different accessories such as grinding, polishing, sanding, and even grooving.
To ensure you select the correct grinder, several key factors should be taken into account. Considerations include disk size, power, design (angle or straight), power source (electric, battery-operated, or pneumatic), and the applications intended for the grinder. Types of Grinders Based on Disc Diameter
At STAYER, we provide two main varieties, angle grinders and straight (die) grinders.
Within the category of angle grinders, we have:
- Mini grinders suitable for 115-125mm diameter discs, with power ratings ranging from 700 W. These tools excel when working on smaller surfaces that are hard to reach with other equipment. Their lightweight design makes them highly effective for cutting metal, ceramic pieces, or thin natural stones. Notably, the 115mm grinder can make cuts up to 30mm deep, while the 125mm version allows for cuts up to 38mm deep.
- Mini grinders equipped for 150mm diameter discs, with power ratings varying from 0 to W, offering deeper cuts when necessary.
- Large grinders that accommodate 230mm diameter discs, along with some models allowing 180mm discs. These powerful tools typically range from 0 to W and are tailored for intensive tasks on larger, tougher surfaces.
Straight (die) grinders, characterized by their design, are especially effective in confined spaces that require precise handling, offering quicker and more versatile operation than standard drills.
We feature:
SD 27 CE Grinder
, designed for use with rotary burs, corundum mounted grinding wheels, laminated fans, and wire brushes.
SD 150 B Grinder
, which is intended for operation with a 150mm grinding wheel ideal for smoothing weld surfaces.
Types of Grinders Based on Power Source
It’s crucial to understand the power types available for grinders, which include electric, battery-powered, or pneumatic options.

What are the key factors to consider in designing and building ...
Electric grinders offer superior performance; battery-operated grinders, on the other hand, are great options when autonomy and mobility are priorities, although their power may not match that of electric grinders.
Pneumatic grinders, while fast and comfortable, are more suited for specialized workshops or specific tasks.
We provide both electric and battery-powered variants, and our batteries come in 18 V with 2.0, 4.0, and 5.0 AH capacities.
Compatible Accessories for Grinders
As previously mentioned, the foremost accessories utilized with grinders are discs such as abrasive cutting and grinding discs for metals; these can also be designed for stone material. Additionally, diamond blades may be fitted for cutting ceramic, construction, corundum, marble, or granite items. Specific attachments like diamond crowns and wire brushes can also be installed on angle grinders.
Safety Recommendations for Grinder Use
Using a grinder requires careful consideration of safety protocols since improper use can be hazardous.
For safe operation, adhere to these essential guidelines for using your grinder effectively:
- First and foremost, always wear personal protective equipment including goggles, robust gloves, a mask, and hearing protection.
- Ensure that the blade selected is compatible with the tool's revolutions to prevent breakage and potential harm.
- Verify that the grip and disc guard are securely fastened and positioned to shield yourself from dust and sparks.
- During operation, maintain a secure stance and ensure that the blade aligns correctly with the cut direction.
- Grip the tool firmly with both hands and utilize the auxiliary handle for added stability.
- Finally, for 90° cuts, make sure the blade is perpendicular to the material. For rough cuts, the angle should be between 30-45°.
By following these guidelines, you can confidently choose and operate your grinder safely. Now it’s time to put this information into action.
