Linear high bay lights are commonly seen in grocery stores, wholesale retailers, warehouses, and any other wide-open spaces with a lot of aisles or shelving. Similar in appearance to a fluorescent T8, linear high bays are long, with differing widths to offer rectangular illumination to suit your space’s needs. They can be mounted directly to the ceiling or hung with chains or cables, depending on your needs.

How to Pick the Appropriate Wattage and Lumens

High Bay LED lights are available in different watts, but its the lumens you need to keep an eye on. As LEDs get more efficient, they will use less and less watts. You can easily choose one depending on the height where the high bay lights are installed. There are different watts for different levels of height:

  • 10-15 feet – This height is ideal for lights with 10,000 to 15,000 lumens.
  • 15-20 feet – This height is ideal for lights with 16,000 to 20,000 lumens.
  • 25-35 feet – For this height, lights with 33,000 lumens are ideal.

Spacing

The spacing between lights is also an important factor in choosing high bay LED High Bay lights. There are three most common cases that you can consider to find the best light for your space. These are listed below:

  • At 15 feet height, about 12 feet spacing is essential for a bright light. However, if you need normal light, a space of 15 feet should be present.
  • At 20 feet high you can go to 15 feet spacing for generating bright light and if you need normal light, a spacing of 18 feet should be used.
  • At 30 feet height, you can go for 20 feet spacing between the lights in order to get a brighter light. However, for normal light, you can go for 25 feet spacing.

Number of Lights

After you’ve determined the spacing between the lights, you’ll need to figure out how many lights you’re going to need. The number of lights depends on the available space. Type of Lights

In order to get better light, you should have light coming from different directions. This is called crossover lighting and, ideally, it needs to come from at least 3 locations. This way, the light coming from opposite sides reduces shadows and evens the lighting. As a result, you get better light that avoids hot spots. You may have to plan for lower lumens but more fixtures to get the right combination.

Lumens

Last but not least, you should always look for lumens, not watts. No matter how many watts you choose, if there aren’t enough lumens, you won’t be able to get the light you need.

0-10V Dimming

However, not every dimmer will work with this luminaire since many have wattage restrictions.

The Lutron Diva DVS-TV, our recommended 0-10V dimmer switch, has a 450W wattage capacity. Wire one 4 ft. high bay to one dimmer so you do not blow out the latter. You can wire two 2 ft. linear high bays since their combined wattages have enough of a buffer from the max load (ie. 2 x 165W = 330W). Read your dimmer switch’s instructions to ensure the wattage capacity.

Long-Lasting

This high bay's LED driver is externally placed, extending its lifespan to hours. Many high bay fixtures on the market are one solid body with their drivers built-in. To achieve a longer lifespan, the linear high bay's external LED driver is kept a half inch away from the main body. This allows airflow more room to pass through, providing better heat dissipation to extend the LED high bay’s operating life.

How Many Fixtures Do I Need?

To find out how many fixtures you need to achieve full light coverage, you must first measure your space’s dimensions. Enter these numbers in a light layout visualizer or calculator that you can find online.

As an example, we’ll use the dimensions of a high school basketball court. Indoor basketball courts are wide in space and have high ceilings because of the sports activity that take place, making LED high bays a necessity.

We will determine this baseline with visual-3d.com’s Visual Interior Tool using another product with similar specs. With a length of 84 feet, a width of 50 feet, and a 43 ft. high ceiling, we recommend using 6 LED high bays and arranging them in a 3x2 array. This will yield 28-foot candles each.

We suggest hang mounting the linear high bays using the included V-brackets and chains. In our example, we chose 43 feet as the height because that is the tallest height you can set the high bays without leaving unlit zones within an 84x50 space. You can still surface mount them on your ceiling, but you may need to install additional fixtures.

Which LED High Bay Should I Use?

LED high bays can not only appear rectangular but also come in circular forms. UFO-style high bay lights are a great alternative to the linear style because of its striking form and unique features.

Unlike linear high bays, it has sharper beam angles, refinable with polycarbonate lenses, to adequately illuminate a small area. This, along with its circular diode arrangement and lumen range, makes our LED UFO lights ideal for lower placement from the floor. Contrastly, LED linear high bays have a wider diode arrangement to create a wider beam angle. They perform best when ceiling mounted higher, making them an excellent solution for lighting up aisles.

The choice also comes down to your aesthetic taste. Do you want the traditional high bay appearance? Choose the UFO style. If you like the boxy fluorescent lamp look, go for the linear style.

How Does it Compare to Traditional High Bays?

While LED lighting is becoming more and more adopted, many warehouse and industrial settings still use high-pressure sodium (HPS), metal halide (MH), or fluorescent high bay lights. They still have their merits, but across the board LED lighting shines much brighter and more efficiently.

Commercial LED lighting is more energy efficient, has better lighting quality, and requires less maintenance than fluorescent lighting. They efficiently emit energy as light as opposed to heat. They are also unidirectional, meaning they point in one direction so none of its output is wasted. Industrial-grade LED lights are made using up-to-date technology that improves lighting in metrics like color rendering (CRI), color temperature (CCT), and foot candle coverage. Lastly, LEDs are made to last longer which translates to decreased maintenance requirements like replacements and general upkeep.

Like LED linear high bays, fluorescent high bays are similar in shape, affordability, and efficiency. But despite their lower upfront costs and high efficacy, their lifespan decreases with every flip of the switch. The tube light bulbs contain mercury so they require a special disposal process. Additionally, they have higher maintenance costs due to labor and tube light bulb and ballast replacements. Commercial LED fixtures are guaranteed to work for about hours and do not need additional equipment to function, which drives up costs.
