Rigid Shaft Couplings - Stafford Manufacturing

Rigid shaft couplings “couple”—i.e., clamp onto and connect—two shafts aligned with each other. By joining the two shafts, these mechanical components enable the transfer of rotary motion from one rotating shaft (the driving shaft) to the other (the driven shaft).

At Stafford Manufacturing, we manufacture and distribute a broad selection of rigid shaft couplings for use in industrial and consumer products. Our coupling products find use in automation, motion control, power transmission, and other original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and maintenance, repair, and operation (MRO) applications.

Overview Of Rigid Shaft Couplings

The simple and durable design of rigid shaft couplings allows the components to transmit more power than comparable flexible shaft couplings but also prevents them from compensating for shaft misalignment. With these considerations in mind, industry professionals generally only use them for applications where the shafts are coaxial and/or pre-positioned in precise alignment with each other.

Rigid Shaft Couplings From Stafford

At Stafford Manufacturing, we are committed to providing customers with the highest quality products and services. By partnering with us for their rigid shaft coupling needs, our customers can take advantage of our:

PRECISION BORES

We ensure that each rigid shaft coupling is made with the greatest precision so that customers find a high degree of consistency in their features and functionality. The bores of our rigid couplings are machined to a smooth finish to avoid damage to shafts and are available in standard sizes from ¼ to 2 inch sizes. Larger bore sizes can be quoted upon request.

HIGH TORQUE CAPACITIES

For high torque applications, we offer our PowerRingTM rigid shaft couplings that can provide up to three times the torque of conventional clamp-type couplings. We also manufacture custom rigid couplings with axial and annular keyways that can accurately maintain axial relationship between two shafts while transmitting high torque.

WIDE PRODUCT RANGE

We manufacture a wide range of inch and metric rigid shaft couplings in a variety of styles, split clamp configurations, and construction materials. Our coupling offerings include standard, off the shelf rigid couplings and custom made parts fabricated to our customer’s specifications and satisfaction.

Gear Couplings: Benefits and Applications - HVH Industrial Solutions

A gear coupling is a flexible coupling intended to connect two shafts at their ends to transmit power to transfer rotational movement from one shaft to another. They are available in a wide range of sizes and can transmit high torque at high speed. Each coupling consists of 2 two hubs with external gear teeth, hubs are joined by flange sleeves with internal gear teeth, and flanges are bolted together. Three types of teeth designs are used in gear couplings: straight teeth, crowned with a constant radius and crowned with a variable radius. The coupling is normally enclosed. Coupling parts include gaskets and O-rings to prevent lubricant leakage filled inside the coupling. General-purpose gear couplings are typically made from carbon steel. Because of their design, these torsionally stiff couplings can withstand some shock loading, but they cannot absorb significant amounts of it.

Lubrication Importance

The couplings require periodic lubrication every 1-2 years, depending on duty and type of lubrication. If properly maintained (good lubrication and proper alignment), the coupling has a service life of 3-5 years and, in many cases, 5-10 years.

Some have a sleeve made of plastic (nylon, high molecular plastic); these don’t require lubrication. They have much lower torque capacity than steel-made couplings and are used mainly on small pumps.

Misalignment

Gear couplings can accommodate angular, parallel, and axial misalignment.  This is due to clearance between gear teeth. Some have crowned teeth. This design allows higher angular misalignment hence parallel as well. Excessive misalignment will shorten your coupling life significantly. It is always good to read the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Benefits of using Gear Couplings

  • High torque density
  • three types of misalignment (angular, parallel, axial)
  • High torque at high speeds

Gear couplings are commonly used in metal industry steel or wire mills applications. They provide significant value in places where a high torque-to-size ratio is necessary and high-speed capabilities.
